It's soooooo easy to forget about it!
After all, most of your client work is done over the phone or internet.
If your "phone voice" creates the impression that you're a slim, head-turning,
29-and-holding - so much the better!

And then the day comes when an enthusiastic client asks you to give a talk to their civic group/ company/ professional association.
Your stomach clutches up into a tight knot and you say,"Wow! Thanks for the opportunity! Let me check and get back to you on that."

Scenario #1:

  • You go into your closet and begin tearing through your "wardrobe" of sweatpants, jeans, hoodies, turtlenecks, etc. and realize, not only do you have nothing to wear as a public speaker, you're terrified of being publicly exposed.

  • You've spent much of your adult life "battling" obesity and finally come to an accommodation with the situation:

  • Because your body does not represent the "real" you, you work in a profession where ONLY the real you is experienced by others.

  • The real you exists from your neck up: your voice, your mind, your personality and (let’s not forget!), “Such a pretty face!”

You call back and apologetically decline the opportunity, making up some excuse or another.

Scenario #2:

  • You go into your closet and select a couple of great outfits from Bloomingdale's, because they still carry some plus-size vendors.

  • Setting them out on the bed, you review your options.

  • Unbidden, you remember the newsletter photos from a recent public talk you gave. You feel an involuntary twinge of sadness in your chest.

  • "God, I've gotten so big. I'm out of control. Still, I pull it together damn good!"

  • The melancholy is starting to seep back into your heart so you take a “deep cleansing breath” and make your selection.

You remind yourself that your stylish clothes, make-up and sheer force of personality can make the audience forget about your size, even if you can't.

You check your schedule, call back and accept the engagement.
But that sadness remains trapped inside you...

I CONFESS:
I've been both of those characters in a 3X Plus-size body!
But in Feb., 2003, I liberated myself from that prison/parole/prison/parole paradigm I'd lived as a fat-girl-on-a-diet/ fat-girl-off-a-diet.
